‘For Sama’ tells the story of Waad al-Kateab’s life through five years of the uprising in Aleppo, over which time she gets married and has a daughter, Sama. Waad faces an agonising decision – whether or not to flee the city to protect her daughter’s life, when leaving means abandoning the struggle for freedom for which she has already sacrificed so much.
The documentary was the first feature for Waad al-Kateab and Edward Watts, and was met with critical acclaim. It won best documentary at the BAFTAs, l’oeil d’or at the Cannes Film Festival, and was nominated for best documentary feature at the Oscars.
