Friday, July 26th, 2019

Dundalk Institute of Technology have announced the launch of a new Certificate in Data Wrangling and Digital Imaging. This course is the only one of its kind in Ireland and having this qualification may give participants the edge in terms of employment prospects.

The aim of this programme is to prepare individuals for employment within the Audio Visual Industry, specifically in the roles of Data Wrangler and Digital Imaging Technician. The course is aimed at those who already have some level of experience in audio visual production, with the intent to upskill participants so they are capable of filling these roles, which are relatively new in high-end digital audio-visual production. Participants will gain an understanding of how the Audio Visual Industry operates and gain the skills required to work in the industry in the digital age.

Participants will gain practical knowledge in the area of data wrangling including on-set file backup procedures, the techniques and software used to ensure integrity of files produced on-set, and the range of hardware used in industry for long term backup purposes. This will include familiarity with LTO (linear tape open) tape storage systems. The programme will also give participants a full understanding of high-end digital production and post-production workflows relevant to the role of Digital Imaging Technician.

Upon completion of this course, participants will be ready to establish themselves as audio visual professionals equipped with skills for the digital age. The intention of this programme is that students will be equipped to take up the role of Data Wrangler or Digital Imaging Technician immediately upon completion of the course.

The course comprises six taught modules over two semesters. These are as follows:

  • Digital Archiving
  • Colour Correction and Grading
  • Digital Imaging 1
  • Data Wrangling 1
  • Advanced Data Wrangling
  • Advanced Digital Imaging

Assessment is on the basis of coursework and/or exam, and will include simulations of real-world projects and scenarios developed in conjunction with industry participants. Module content will include case studies of workflows utilised in the Irish digital audio visual sector.

The course is aimed specifically at those who already have some level of experience in audio visual production and are interested in developing their careers in this area. The intent is to upskill participants so they are capable of filling two roles which are relatively new in high end digital audio visual production – those roles being that of (i) Digital Imaging Technician and (ii) Data Wrangler.
