Traditional Tailoring for Costume

Course Profile:

This programme, taking place over six consecutive Saturdays over July and August (9th, 16th and 23rd of July, 6th, 13th and 20th of August), aims to give costume personnel a practical grounding in traditional tailoring techniques, which can be applied to tailoring for all periods.

The programme will kick off on the first morning with a lecture on the last 200 years of menswear from costume designer Eimer Ní Mhaoldomhnaigh. This will be followed by a series of practical weekly workshops led by Gillian Carew, during which participants will make a tailored jacket encompassing many basic and advanced tailoring techniques.

The course will include the following:

  • Week 1: Pattern supplied (to be copied by group), prepare cloth, lay patterns, cut cloth, tailor tack, cut linings, pockets and facings.
  • Week 2: Pockets – 2 x single jett pocket, 1 x outbreast welt, 1x inbreast.
  • Week 3: Canvas, bridle, pad stitch lapels, using lapel shaper, sew to back, attach facings, secure facings.
  • Week 4: Hem, position linings, attach shoulders, secure under collar and cut to shape.
  • Week 5: Lay on top collar (collar attached by hand). Sleeve make-up, insert sleeves.
  • Week 6: Fell lining, hand button holes, prick stitch edge finish, press, position buttons, complete.


Participant Profile:

This programme is aimed at film costume/wardrobe assistants, trainees or personnel who wish to enhance their knowledge of and proficiency in traditional tailoring techniques.  Applicants from related areas such as theatre and fashion are also encouraged to apply.  Applicants should have strong sewing skills.
