Screen Skills Ireland is pleased to offer the Sales and Distribution Clinic. This course is offered free of charge to support the Irish creative screen industries impacted by the ongoing situation with COVID-19.

The Sales & Distribution Clinic is a 3-week programme and one-on-one mentoring initiative that will prime producers for being best prepared for the future of the industry.

This programme will allow producers to gain a greater understanding of the impact corona had and has on sales and distribution and the marketplace as a whole. What has and is shifting, what patterns have developed during the global lockdown, which may or may not be reversed, e.g. change in audience behaviour, breaking of release windows, etc.

On completing this course and the mentoring component each participant will be able to prepare a strategy for distribution of their project.

Participants will be expected to complete homework/assignments during the course

3 x 2 hour modules (10am-12noon) over 3 weeks and a total of 2 x 30 minute one-on-one clinics during the week (TBA) following the on-line modules.

Week 1: Tuesday 14 July

Pre-Work 1

  • Pre-course reading
  • Define course expectations
  • Identify main challenges for you and for project through the Project Specification sheet (SWOT)

Module 1: 10am-12noon

  • Introduction & agenda/zoom etiquette; brief introduction round for participants/Icebreaker
  • Sales/Festivals/Markets: Update on how sales, distribution, festivals and marketplaces have been affected by global lockdown. Overview on best practices observed and who will be left in business.
  • Breakout Session: Discuss Market Ambitions and how to achieve them

Post Work

  • 1st One-on-One Clinic: Plan A: Sales and Distribution Plan

Week 2: Tuesday 21 July

Pre-Work 2

  • Refine Market Ambitions Template
  • Reading and viewing of pre-session resources

Module 2: 10am-12noon

  • Intro to the day/recap quiz
  • Alternative methods of Distribution / Audiences and Audience Behaviour: Poll: what methods have you identified, which have you used. All film and media audience have been forced to consume online, online literacy has increased, what does this mean for your project and the marketplace? A look at the digital distribution landscape and who benefited and lost out in the process.
  • Breakout Session: discuss opportunities of different distribution methods in groups.

Post Work

  • 2nd One-on-One Clinic: Plan B: Integrate Alternative Distribution methods into your Sales and Distribution Plan: The New Landscape

Week 3: Tuesday 28 July

Pre-Work 3

  • 1-pager for project, prepare 3 min project intro

Module 3: 10am-12noon

  • Day agenda/recap/short intro by every participant to their project.
  • Market Pitch: How to present your project to the Market; Best practice on how to present yourself and your projects; Understanding and preparing your pitch, making the most of materials and creating a two-way communication
  • Breakout Session: have a meeting with your breakout partner
  • Open forum next steps for you and project/wrap up

Participant Profile:

This course is aimed at: those who have already produced at least one professional film (drama or factual); and have a film (narrative or documentary) in late stage development or in post-production, and will be ready to take to market in 2021. Basic to intermediate knowledge of how sales & distribution works is required, e.g. previous market visits.
