Call for Entries: ACE Co-Production Lab Hong Kong

THE ACE CO-PRODUCTION LAB IN HONG KONG (ACL IN HK) is an exclusive 4-day workshop that will gather a group of European & Chinese professionals in Hong Kong from the 14th to the 17th of March 2016 during the HAF (Hong Kong – Asia Film Financing Forum). This workshop aims to develop the opportunities for artistic and financial cooperation between these two zones and cultivate a better understanding of each other’s professional environment. It will consist of case studies, marketplace presentations, pitching sessions, networking events and one-to-one meetings.

o Number of Participants: the Selection Committee will select 5 EU and 5 Chinese producers

Eligibility Requirements for Submission
In order to make sure that the ACE Co-production Lab in Hong Kong is as fruitful as possible for each of the participants, and to comply with our contract with our funder Creative Europe, several eligibility requirements have been established.
The applicant must:
1) be an experienced independent European producer having theatrically released at least one feature film in his/her own country and be credited as the main producer of that film (fiction, documentary or animation),
2) have one feature film project underway for co-production between the EU and China, and be the majority producer of that project,
3) be based in a Creative Europe country.
Note: Priority will be given to the most experienced producers currently working on a live-action fiction feature film.

The participation fee for EU producers amounts to €950 (+ VAT when applicable), which includes the return airplane tickets from Paris to Hong Kong (group departure from Paris), the city transfer and full board accommodation.

Asif Kapadia and Sean McAllister to attend Galway Documentary Event

Talking Documentary, Galway Film Centre’s annual Film and TV seminar will take place on January 15th and 16th, 2016 with special guests Asif Kapadia (AMY, SENNA) and Sean McAllister (A SYRIAN LOVE STORY). It will consist of 2 days of talks, panel discussions and screenings on many aspects of documentary and will be run in association with Creative Europe Galway, the BAI, TG4, the IFB and Screen Training Ireland.

On Saturday January 16th, Asif Kapadia will be interviewed about his work by documentary filmmaker, Pat Collins. Asif’s recent film, AMY, the biopic about Amy Winehouse, is on the longlist for the Oscars 2016 and broke box office records when it was released this Summer. Also, AMY won Best European Documentary at the European Film Awards on December 12th.

Sean McAllister, whose film A SYRIAN LOVE STORY, won the Grand Jury Prize at Sheffield DocFest this year, will be interviewed about his approach to his work as a self –shooting, observational documentary maker. Sean will be interviewed by GMIT Film & Documentary lecturer, Felim McDermott.

The Do’s and Don’ts of Pitching and The European Documentary Landscape will be covered by Paul Pauwels, Director of the European Documentary Network. Paul, who is attending the seminar in association with Creative Europe Galway, will also conduct one to one meetings with filmmakers.

Friday afternoon, there will be a panel discusssion with Keith Potter, Ken Wardrop and Daisy Asquith, which will be chaired by Ross Whitaker. Also, on Saturday morning, director Richard Curson Smith will be interviewed by documentary filmmaker, Paula Kehoe about Documenting the Arts. Smith recently directed STRONGER THAN DEATH about the poet Ted Hughes for the BBC.

The seminar will open with a gala UNESCO City of Film screening of A SYRIAN LOVE STORY at An Taibhdhearc Theatre on Thursday January 14th at 8pm, with director, Sean McAllister, in attendance.

Asset Deadline Extended!

ASSET training fund is aimed at specialist design skills for digital and physical production.

ASSET is a flexible and bespoke training initiative led entirely by the individual participant. The scheme is targeted at design skills for digital and physical production with particular emphasis on specialist technology and design skills, including software training and cutting edge international industry practice.
The scheme is targeted at design professionals at all levels, from senior artists and HODs to new entrants, and aims to support the development of key talent at all levels in the following areas:

  • VFX
  • Animation
  • Art Department
  • Costume
  • Hair/Make-Up

Candidates can apply for an individual training fund of up 70% of the cost of training, up to a maximum of €5,000, with which they can choose a range of training interventions in order to enhance their specialist skills. The fund may be used for any of the following:

Mentoring: ASSET funding may be utilised to pay a mentor, and support the cost of travelling overseas for mentoring sessions
Peer to Peer Learning: ASSET funding may be used to cover the expenses of international networking in order to facilitate peer to peer learning.
Online training: ASSET funding may be put towards online training, for example Animation Mentor, Gnomon, Digital Tutors, FXPHD, etc.
Work placement: ASSET funding may be used to support the candidate during unpaid periods of shadowing or work placement either locally or internationally
International training: ASSET funding may be used to pay the costs of high level international training otherwise unavailable in Ireland, and included one-to-one bespoke training
Local training: ASSET funding may be put towards the cost of appropriate local training offered by any local training providers, including but not limited to Screen Training Ireland.

Fingal Film Festival Announce the Opening of 2016 Submissions.

Fingal Film Festival announce the opening of their 2016 submissions. The end of this year sees the beginning of the submission process for the fifth instalment of Fingal Film Festival’s annual event, which will take place in September 2016.

As part of the centenary celebrations in 2016, the festival will be dedicating a slot in the schedule for all subjects relating to the 1916 Rising. Filmmakers creating content in any of the mediums screened at the festival are encouraged to submit for possible inclusion in the Fingal Film Festival 2016.

Big Stories on the Small Screen Speakers Announced

Big Stories on the Small Screen is a major new initiative aimed at building a landscape of excellence in writing, producing and directing long-form screen drama from Ireland. Funded by the Broadcasting Authority of Ireland in association with the Irish Film Board, Big Stories is headed by BAFTA-winning director, writer and producer Neasa Hardiman.

The initiative launches on Saturday with a day-long conference. Highlights include a keynote lecture by Michael Hirst, creator of THE TUDORS, VIKINGS and CAMELOT as well as the BAFTA-winning ELIZABETH and ELIZABETH: THE GOLDEN AGE.
Former MD of Company Pictures John Yorke will reveal the structure behind successful storytelling. And the creative team behind LOVE/HATE will discuss their collaboration.

The day also includes discussion with Ireland’s foremost producers Morgan O’Sullivan and James Flynn, prominent film maker Katie Holly and Emmy-award winning director Dearbhla Walsh.

Screen Producers Ireland CEO Elected Chair of the European Coordination of Independent TV Producers (CEPI)

Screen Producers Ireland (SPI) CEO, Barbara Galavan, was today elected Chair of the European Coordination of Independent Producers (CEPI), in Prague.

CEPI was founded in 1990 to represent the interests of independent cinema and television producers operating in Europe.

With a dedicated office in Brussels the Coordination represents 6,000 European based production companies all contributing to European culture and their creative economies.

Collectively, members of CEPI supply thousands hours of new programming annually to European broadcasters.

Speaking after her election SPI CEO Barbara Galavan said:
“I am honoured to accept the position of Chair of CEPI and am conscious of the responsibility it bestows. It is a time of great change for the audio-visual industry. This presents tremendous opportunities and challenges. It behoves us, as the unified voice of independent TV producers, to communicate a clear and strong message from the sector to the European Commission at this critical time as they attempt to legislate for the change that the digital revolution has brought.”

She paid tribute to outgoing Chair Werner Muller from the Austrian Producers Association for his dedication and commitment to the CEPI agenda for the past 4 years.
